On December 3, 2006 I woke up and realized I was fifty! I used to think "Five O" only applied to Hawaii. I thanked God for bringing me this far and I also thanked him for having made walking and going to the gym part of my life. I know regular walking is partly the reason I'm alive today, and it's good to know that I don't have to keep up with the runners; brisk walking does the trick for me.
My name is Adjoa des Bordes-Imboua, and I'm a French-English Conference Translator. I have three children-Patti 21, Louise 19 and Willi 16. Since they were little, they and their Dad, Victor, have always seen me at least three times a week in walking gear. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure after Willi was born. We were living in Abidjan then. I told myself I wouldn't allow the condition to end my life, so I got walking. I was encouraged by a man I used to meet on the road, who had suffered a stroke and was walking his way to recovery. He used to walk slowly at first and with time picked up and moved faster.
Walking for me has become a way of life. As for marathons, I've run the New York Marathon, the Tokyo Marathon, the London Marathon, the all in my fantasy world. Where can't we go in our dreams? I would watch these marathons on TV and see myself somewhere in the middle of the crowd; sometimes I'd even shove my way through to the head of the pack. I'd wake up from my reverie, shake my head, and hear and see the more familiar sights and sounds of Accra. When Anna told me about the upcoming Accra International Marathon in September, she was unwittingly telling me, "Adjoa, get real, start your Marathon at Prampam!" - and that's exactly what I'm going to do. Isn't it exciting to do new things after hitting 50? Ready, Steady, Go! Go! Go!
The Longevity Project is a worthy cause to ensure that we live long and not die a day before God's appointed time. The upcoming marathon is an opportunity for all of us to keep our lives moving – literally. Please add your quota to this event by helping me raise funds for the Project. Any amount is big enough. I'm aiming to raise $2,500 (which is about the same in Ghana cedis). You may donate by just clicking on Donate. You may also send me an email if you need further clarification from me. Like Nike, let's just do it!
