I have lived in California for almost two decades and have had the opportunity to visit Ghana on several occasions. Each visit has drawn me closer to the question “What can I do to help?” as I see the enormity of the need. I want to run in the 2008 Accra International Marathon—an event dedicated to helping those whose health is in peril.
Being a part of something this important brings an enormous amount of joy to me. A visit to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra or Komfo Anokye Hospital in Kumasi would probably give any first-timer chills after observing not just the hospital conditions but the number of people waiting to see a doctor. Most may never see the doctor until it is too late. Many have died young from sicknesses that could definitely have been avoided if they had access to good healthcare. Poor healthcare issues in Ghana are probably robbing the country of its future by depleting the lives of the young. I watched a movie called “Emmanuel’s Gift” and saw how one man’s determination and selfless sacrifices could change the lives of others and give hope to many who would otherwise be left out.
This is why I have made a commitment to join this year’s marathon to help make a difference in someone’s life. But I can’t do it alone. I need your help. Your sponsorship will make it possible for me to raise money to support the important work The Longevity Project is doing to improve the health of Ghanaians. Thank you!
