To my Family, Friends and Patrons:
Fellow travelers,
I am back to running marathons again. My first marathon was to test if I could take on the challenge and the discipline of “going the distance”, my second 26-mile caper was for the experience and romance of running through wine country and sampling the local product as I ran (well, I think I ran…difficult to remember…), and this run will be for something else entirely. For my third attempt I have signed up to run the Accra International Marathon in Ghana. Yes, that is in Africa. I have chosen this particular marathon because it supports The Longevity Project. This project was created to help improve the life expectancy, which is 58 years, and the quality of life for Ghanaians.
I will be running about a thousand miles between now, March, and September 28. A thousand miles to run 26 miles in a country a few thousand miles away that I know little about but about which I am learning. I have done some studying up lately and have found some interesting facts. I look at priorities in my life and see that Ghanaian priorities are not much different. They spend over 40 percent of their national budget on education, that’s about what I spend on my children’s education! Ghana also is making a concerted effort to improve the life expectancy, cut the infant mortality rate and improve the overall health of its citizens. The Longevity Project is part of this effort.
I feel like National Public Radio on one of their pledge drives and want to list all the benefits that can be derived from everyone’s big or small contribution. Suffice it to say this is a worthy cause and I am glad to be a part of it. You and I have the easy part of this project but it can be important part of the entire process. So please join me in supporting The Longevity Project. My goal is to donate 5000 dollars by the end June, that’s only 100 people giving 50 dollars or five thousand people giving a dollar. The point is everything helps and will be put to good use. I am asking that you join me in spirit and with your financial help.
Thanks—I hope to see you on the roads.
